Description

Cinnamon Velvet Underglaze is a deep sienna color that is very warm at cone 05, darkens and becomes chocolatey at cone 5, and turns to a dark brown at cone 10. A clear glaze deepens the color of the underglaze significantly at any temperature.

Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes can be used with or without glaze. When left unglazed, they will assume the rich textural appearance of velvet. When glazed with transparent matte glaze, they take on a soft, satin finish. Colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze but will lose their matte surface quality.

The underglazes fire true to color from the pot and can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or mature Cone 04 bisque . To shade, tint, or customize the color of these underglazes, simply mix them with other colors. Velvets have a wide firing range 1040°C - 1220°C. Some of these underglazes have also been successfully fired to 1305°C (Cone 10).

Working Notes

Try two finish possibilities: When left unglazed these colors have the rich textural appearance of velvet; when covered with transparent glaze they intensify in color.

When firing to earthenware temperatures (1060°C -1160°C) we recomend using either our brush on Transparent Glaze, or for dipping applications our Transparent Powder.

When firing to stoneware temperatures (1250°C - 1280°C) we recomend using either our brush on Transparent Glaze, or for dipping applications our Transparent Powder.

Can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or bisqueware.

Health & Safety

Dinnerware Safe under a suitable glaze.

Tableware producers must test all finished ware to establish dinnerware status, due to possible variations in firing temperature and contamination.

"Most of my pots are slab built and decorated with underglaze colours at the leather hard stage where I use them like paint, first heavily diluted with water to make a ‘wash’ and then straight from the pot for areas of solid colour. I have experimented with most underglaze colours on the market including those I have made up myself but have found that Amaco Velvet Underglaze work best for me. They are easy to apply straight from the pot giving a solid colour with just one or two coats or diluted with water for a thinner watercolour type decoration. I bisque to 1000’o. The underglaze is well adhered or the post at this stage, some brands aren’t and will rub off during the next stage of my decoration process where I cover the pot with an oxide and then wash off the surface leaving traces of oxide in the texture of the pot. Some areas of the pot are glazed and others are left unglazed. The Velvet underglaze has a lovely ‘velvet’ finish in areas where it is unglazed and a bright shiny finish where glazed."
