Description

Jet Black Velvet Underglaze is a cool black color, smooth and velvety at cone 05, darkens at cone 5, and becomes darkest black and slightly glossy at cone 10. A clear glaze deepens and accentuates the underglaze significantly at any temperature.

Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes can be used with or without glaze. When left unglazed, they will assume the rich textural appearance of velvet. When glazed with transparent matte glaze, they take on a soft, satin finish. Colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze but will lose their matte surface quality.

The underglazes fire true to color from the pot and can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or mature Cone 04 bisque . To shade, tint, or customize the color of these underglazes, simply mix them with other colors. Velvets have a wide firing range 1040°C - 1220°C. Some of these underglazes have also been successfully fired to 1305°C (Cone 10).

Working Notes

Try two finish possibilities: When left unglazed these colors have the rich textural appearance of velvet; when covered with transparent glaze they intensify in color.

When firing to earthenware temperatures (1060°C -1160°C) we recomend using either our brush on Transparent Glaze, or for dipping applications our Transparent Powder.

When firing to stoneware temperatures (1250°C - 1280°C) we recomend using either our brush on Transparent Glaze, or for dipping applications our Transparent Powder.

Can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or bisqueware.

Health & Safety

Dinnerware Safe under a suitable glaze.

Tableware producers must test all finished ware to establish dinnerware status, due to possible variations in firing temperature and contamination.

"This underglaze is so fantastic I bought a huge bottle. It keeps to a deep black when fired plain or glazed. Bath Potters are one of the best companies I've used for pottery supplies too. Excellent service. "

"I am very happy with the Amaco underglazes. I use them to paint on porcelain tiles. I keep a stock of black, white, a blue, red and yellow. And with these I mix them to produce the colours I want. I found I can even place blobs of these colours on a palette and make the colours on the brush as I paint. They dry to a lighter shade than it appears when you first apply the colours but you soon get used to that. I also shop with Bath Potters because I always get my order the very next day even without paying extra for postage."
