Working Notes

Mixing Instructions:

1. Water First: Pour the measured water into a clean container first, then slowly add the powder to minimize dust.
2. Slump and Soak: Let the powder sit and soak in the water for a few minutes (or even overnight) before stirring to ensure even hydration.
3. Sieve: For the smoothest results and to avoid defects, pass the liquid glaze through a standard 80/100 mesh sieve.
4. Final Adjustment: If the glaze feels too thick after sitting, add water one tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired flow.

Application Instructions:

• Coats: Apply 3 thick coats on smooth surfaces or 2 coats on heavily textured surfaces.
• Drying: Allow each layer to dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Firing Instructions:

• Bisque: Pieces must be bisque fired first using a clay body specifically designed for Raku to withstand thermal shock.
• Glaze Firing Range: Firing temperature for Bavaria is 950°C – 1040°C.
• Reduction:
  • Remove the piece while it is still red hot.
  • Immediately place it into a reduction bin (e.g., a metal can with sawdust, newspaper, or dried leaves) and seal the lid.
  • Leave the piece in the reduction chamber for approximately 20 minutes.
• Post-Firing: Once cooled, wash the piece in water to remove soot and encourage further crackle effects.

Health & Safety

A powder or dried brush-on glaze presents a hazard. We suggest when working with powders or when cleaning, wear an FFP3/P3 mask and filter and use a wet sponge to reduce the amount of dust.

Note: Like most Raku glazes, this glaze is not food-safe or watertight.

To create an invisible, protective barrier against moisture, our Ceramic Sealer is a liquid silicon dioxide which can be applied to all unglazed, stable, porous surfaces such as unglazed raku work. However the sealer will not make your piece food-safe, just watertight.
