Shale LoStone

LoStone Shale is a rich, dark grey stoneware clay with subtle lilac undertones at lower firing temperatures. Its deep, moody tone brings a contemporary edge to ceramic work, offering a striking surface character that enhances both functional and decorative forms.

As part of our pioneering LoStone range, Shale is the UK’s first low-fire stoneware, achieving vitrification at 1160°C. Traditionally, dark stoneware bodies demand higher firing temperatures, but LoStone Shale challenges convention delivering the strength, refinement, and visual impact of high-fire stoneware while firing at significantly lower temperatures.

LoStone Shale is ideal for throwing, modelling, and casting with a responsive texture and excellent workability across forming techniques. It's dark tone and subtle lilac hues provide an elegant contrast to glazes, slips, and oxides, making it a favourite for potters seeking a sustainable, cost-effective stoneware that combines distinctive colour with reliable performance.
