Description

Weaker than copper oxide, but gives an evenly textured glaze less prone to speckling.

Copper carbonate (CuCO3) is a green powder that is used primarily as a glaze or slip colorant. Depending on firing conditions and glaze formulation it has the potential to produce shades of green, turquoise or reds (reds usually occur in reduction firings). Copper carbonate can also be applied by brushwork as a wash on bisqueware.

Suggested concentrations of copper in the preparation of slips and glazes are as follows:

In slips: 2 - 8%
In glazes: < 5%

If concentrations above 5% are used, glazes often change to a metallic pewter.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Copper should not be used as a component in soluble glazes that will come in contact with food or drink, as it is likely to leach.

In its powdered form, copper carbonate is harmful if swallowed, and may cause skin and eye irritation upon contact. Please use protective coverings when handling this chemical.

Health & Safety & Disposal

  • When handling powdered ceramic oxides in the UK, you must wear an FFP3/P2 face mask and nitrile gloves to prevent inhalation and skin contact.
  • Wear a wipeable apron, polyester overalls, or similar. Clean or wash frequently.
  • Always clean your studio with a wet sponge rather than sweeping to stop dust from becoming airborne.
  • When preparing glazes, add the dry material to water, not vice-versa, to minimise dust formation.
  • Do not allow eating and drinking in the studio and thoroughly wash hands when leaving.
  • Never eat, drink, or apply cosmetics in areas where clay or glazes are handled.
  • Ensure emergency eye-washing facilities are available in the room.
  • Review official guidelines regarding studio ventilation and chemical management routinely.

Copper Carbonate is classified as Harmful and Very toxic to the environment under UK/EU chemical regulations.

Disposal of this product, solutions and any by-products should at all times comply with the requirements of environmental protection and waste disposal legislation and any regional local authority requirements.
