Description

Powdered underglazes can be used to colour glaze, clay bodies or slips, just like stains.

Powdered underglazes are generally used for hand painting decoration onto bisque clay, but can also be applied to greenware. The powdered underglaze is mixed with either universal mediumglaze medium or water to form a thin consistency. This mixture is then applied to dust-free and grease-free bisque ware/greenware, and then can be covered with a suitable clear glaze.

  • Unlike glazes, underglaze colours can be mixed together to create new colours.
  • Powdered underglaze colours will last forever if stored in a dry air tight container.
  • Suitable for use to 1280°C

How To Use

Underglaze powders can added to the following liquids (PLEASE USE ALL RATIOS STRICKLY AS A GUIDE ONLY):

Glaze Medium - A water based gum medium, suitable for all applications. 1/2 tsp underglaze powder to 60ml medium.

Universal Medium - A water based medium which gives a creamy, slow drying colour mixture and is best suited for hand painting.  1/2 tsp underglaze powder to 100ml medium

Water - Underglaze powders can added to water. Mixing ratio varies depending on technique. 1/2 tsp underglaze powder to 100ml water

We recomend adding a little bit of water to hee powder first to aid mixing.

Trouble Shooting

Do not apply to thickly as underglaze colours can flake off if overapplied.

Certain colours such as purples, pinks and reds have a burnout temperatures which must be noted to ensure you do not lose certain colours during the glaze firing.

Care must be taken to ensure that tin based colours are not mixed with chrome based colours.

"in an attempt to replace a turqouise underglaze poweder, first I was sent a turq green, then a pale and quite different turqouise, which find fires to a lovely pale blue. Neither are what I have been searching for. I have fired the same and will forward photos in due course, in hopes to find a better, stornger turqouise."
