Description

Spectrum Nova Matte Black Stoneware is a intense true black with a satin matte finish.

Nova Stoneware Glazes produce stunning effects during the firing cycle. The main difference between the NOVA Stoneware series and the Stoneware Glazes is that NOVA glazes are mainly formulated from raw materials, such as Kaolin, feldspar, oxides ETC. rather than frits and ceramic stains which are used in the stoneware glazes. There are two significant benefits from using raw materials. Firstly they are less expensive which leads to more economical pricing, secondly raw materials are less dense than frits and stains which makes them easier to suspend in water. The NOVE series glazes are all lead-free and dinnerware safe.

The final appearance of the glaze is dependent on firing temperature, glaze thickness and the composition of the clay body being used. The same glaze can look quite different on different clay bodies. The images shown are one dipping application fired to cone 5 in an electric kiln on a white clay body. Different results may be experienced in reduction.

1 pint/454ml - Brush-on

Fire between Cones 4/6 (1180°C -1220°C)

1180--1220       matte-2

Working Notes

Please be aware that these glazes are more fluid and may run particularly when applied thickly.

Health & Safety

Manufacturers Recommendations: Dinnerware Safe indicates the fired glaze surface meets the FDA standards for food safe, the fired surface is free of surface texture that could potentially trap bacterial, and the fired surface is chemically durable. Please note, dinnerware safety is not defined by cutlery scratches. Finished ware producers bear responsibility for dinnerware safe testing their ware being sold into commerce.

We at Bath Potters will quote the manufacturers recommendations, but if you intend to make ceramic dinnerware with selling in mind, then you would be best advised to get your wares tested.

Customer Reviews

By Gaby on 20th December 2022
"A good solid black that doesn't move. Possibly a little more sheen than I would have expected at 1200. I would say borderline matte/satin. But I guess if you want something totally matte then use an underglaze! Really nice solid coverage and a good workhorse glaze."
