Description

Grolleg has a lower iron content and is a little stronger with high plasticity. A refractory, medium plasticity white-firing clay used mainly in white earthenware, bone china and porcelain clay bodies.

A blended English china clay, combining moderate plasticity, low titania content and relatively high flux content, low shrinkage and blue-white fired color. The low Tio2 content is a key factor for the usefulness of Grolleg. It is excellent for making translucent throwing or casting porcelains. The pottery community uses many Grolleg based porcelains.

When handling powdered ceramic materials, you must wear an FFP3/P2 face mask and nitrile gloves to prevent inhalation and skin contact.
Wear a wipeable apron, polyester overalls, or similar. Clean or wash frequently.
Always clean your studio with a wet sponge rather than sweeping to stop dust from becoming airborne.
When preparing glazes, add the dry material to water, not vice-versa, to minimise dust formation.
Do not allow eating and drinking in the studio and thoroughly wash hands when leaving.
Never eat, drink, or apply cosmetics in areas where clay or glazes are handled.
Ensure emergency eye-washing facilities are available in the room.
Review official guidelines regarding studio ventilation and chemical management routinely.

In the UK, pure China clay is classified as a non-hazardous, non-dangerous substance for transport. However, as a dry dust, it falls under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, with strict Workplace Exposure Limits to prevent respiratory irritation or lung disease.

Dispose of as normal industrial waste, in accordance with local/regional/national/international regulations.
