Description

Spectrum’s 1173 Textured Hot Chowder cone 4/6 (1180°C-1240°C) stoneware glaze is a glossy, creamy glaze.

This is a brush on glaze ready to be applied to bisque fired ware. They are all lead free, non-toxic and dinnerware safe. They are formulated to produce reactions during the firing cycle which give very interesting and beautiful effects. The final appearance of the glaze is dependent on firing temperature, glaze thickness and the composition of the clay body being used. The sample shown has 3 coats of glaze brushed on a white clay and is fired to cone 5 in an electric kiln.

Working Notes

For best results fire 1200°C with a 30 minute soak on a computerised controller. This glaze is quite fluid, and does run on vertical surfaces.

Try overlapping glazes for new and interesting glaze results. Some of Spectrum Glazes are designed to move and shift in the glaze firing resulting in beautifully bright and layered looks.

Health & Safety

Manufacturers Recommendations: Dinnerware Safe indicates the fired glaze surface meets the FDA standards for food safe, the fired surface is free of surface texture that could potentially trap bacterial, and the fired surface is chemically durable. Please note, dinnerware safety is not defined by cutlery scratches. Finished ware producers bear responsibility for dinnerware safe testing their ware being sold into commerce.

We at Bath Potters will quote the manufacturers recommendations, but if you intend to make ceramic dinnerware with selling in mind, then you would be best advised to get your wares tested.

Customer Reviews

"My absolute favourite. This is a bit like Amaco Honey Flux but easier to get hold of! A neutral vanilla ice cream colour on its own, it is even more special when layered over or under other glazes to create movement. I find it works well with Amaco glazes as well as Spectrum. Adds a lovely drippy interest to glazes without texture, brings movement and warm shine to pieces. Very runny beyond 1220 so recommend not using it on the lower half of ware. Have some fun with it!"
