Description

Our decorating slips, are suitable for use on both earthernware and stoneware clay bodies. When manufacturing our slips we believe in using high percentages of stain to give strong, vivid colours throughout the range. The slip can be applied to leather hard clay with brushes, sponges or slip trailers. After biscuit firing your slip decorated piece can be glazed with a suitable transparent glaze which will further enhance the vibrant colours, or can be left matt without a glaze.

  • Our sample is fired to 1140°C. The colours darken the higher you fire.
  • Apply 2-3 times with a brush or on leatherhard, dried, unfired ware.
  • Without overglazing slips become earthy matt
  • Bright colour intensity when overglazed thinly with transparent glaze.
  • Well suited e.g. for marbling technique: use slightly diluted on soaked biscuit fired or leatherhard clay
  • Perfect also for Sgraffito technique

Working Notes

Slip trailing: Use a squeeze bottle with a fine tip (a slip trailer) to apply slip in lines, dots, or patterns, creating a raised, textural effect.

Slip painting: Apply colored slip with brushes, sponges, or other tools. This can be done on leather-hard.

Dipping and pouring: Dip or pour slip over a piece to achieve a uniform color and coat. A clear glaze can be applied later for a finished look.

Sgraffito: After applying a layer of contrasting colored slip, use a tool to scratch or carve through the slip to reveal the color of the underlying clay body.

Feathering and marbling: Apply bands of contrasting-colored slip, then use a pointed tool or a feather to comb through the lines, creating a feathered or swirled pattern.

Resist: Cover areas of the clay with a resist material, such as wax or paper, before applying slip. The resist prevents the slip from adhering, creating a crisp, clean-edged design.
