Description
Lustres are dissolved metallic particles that are suspended in a thick spirit solution. They are applied with a brush onto an already fired, glazed ceramic surface and refired at low on-glaze temperature to create a metallic surface.
Recommended firing temperatures are:
Earthenware & Stoneware Ceramics: 690°C-700°C
Porcelain: 750°C-815°C
Working Notes
These products are ready-to-use and are generally of a gluey, dark brown liquid aspect. Use a smooth brush. The pieces to be decorated must be well cleaned and bone dry. The brush must neither be too heavily-laden nor too little-laden and the layer applied must be uniform and fine.
Dilution: 5%–15% as required
Manufacturer recommendation: Best used within 12 months of opening or purchase. Luster mediums dry out easily. If the cap is loose, the essential oils evaporate and thicken the liquid.
Thinning old lustres: You can sometimes revive thickened luster using a specialized luster essence or thinner, though badly degraded metal suspension may still fire unevenly or turn dull.
Top Tip: Keep brushes, bottles and tools free from water during use.
Note: Before using these products on a large scale we advise you to try a preliminary test.
Please note that the information provided is for guidance only. Different application methods and different firing conditions will affect results.
